Vegetarianism

A great way to try to live more sustainably is to try and cut down on meat intake. You don't have to give up your favorite hamburgers or steaks to save the environment either. Just cutting meat from your diet one day out of the week can make an impact. Another option would be to only eat meat one meal a day, as opposed to three.

The reason meat makes such an impact on the environment is  because of all the resources is requires to make. The cattle require food, water and shelter, then the meat requires processing and cleaning, and finally that meat needs to be transported to your grocery store. Compared to fresh fruits and vegetables meat requires up to 200 times more!

If giving up meat seems like too much of a daunting task try and find a local butcher that sources their meat from a farm in your area. Not only will you be supporting your local farms and economy you will be cutting down on distances the meat needs to travel to get to your home! It is probably a lot fresher too!

I have been a vegetarian now for three years. It has been trying at times but overall I love the choice I made to cut all meat from my diet. I still eat egg and dairy products because I like them (haha :P). For tips and recipes to try your hand at going meatless just ask!
